A Day in the Life of a Nossalonian

Have you ever wondered what a day at Nossal High School entails? Stepping through the grand entrances or feeling a sense of belonging instantly dispels the morning apprehension. Allow me to share a glimpse into my life and explore the potential for this to resonate with you.

Upon entering the school, I proceed to my locker within the building. I encounter a few of my acquaintances from Nossal. What distinguishes Nossal is its ease in fostering friendships. The shared aspiration for academic success motivates individuals to maintain their connections with their peers. After catching up with my friends, I collect my laptop and textbooks for my tutorial.

During tutorial, the majority of the time is dedicated to marking assignments. As an adult learning environment, it is customary to check your timetable or team for any unforeseen activities or information. This period also provides an opportunity for students to engage in discussions and socialise within their tutorial class.

Following tutorial, I proceed to science, which is one of my preferred subjects. Many classroom activities are independent, mirroring a university environment where students have the autonomy to engage with the topic and assess their level of comprehension. The instructors possess diverse educational backgrounds, including PhDs, which equips them with extensive knowledge in each subject. Initially, I found the instructors intimidating, but over time, I realised their unwavering support and their willingness to address questions both during class and in their free time.

Subsequently, my second period is my elective subject. Nossal offers a comprehensive range of electives, each covering a unique topic. Each elective incorporates both theoretical and practical learning components. After completing my elective, I take a break for recess, which typically lasts for 20 minutes. During this time, students have the option to spend it indoors or outdoors. I usually opt to play basketball with my friends outside.

Following recess, I engaged in double English. The approach to English instruction in Year 9 is particularly intriguing, as it equips us with practical skills throughout the learning process. English tasks are selected from a choice board at the commencement of the academic year, ensuring that students explore diverse topics simultaneously. Some tasks focus on analytical fields, while others emphasise communication skills. This comprehensive approach prepares us effectively for the VCE, where we will encounter various literary forms.

Following double English, we partake in lunch, which ranks among my most cherished aspects of the day. It provides students with an hour to form study groups or engage in outdoor activities. Overall, it offers an opportunity for relaxation, catch-up work, or a head start on homework.

The final period, known as 9Time, is dedicated to Year 9 students’ exploration of the school curriculum. Initially, it served as a means of integrating new students into the community. However, its focus has shifted to rehearsing for the House Performing Arts Competition, a school-wide event that showcases the talents of various houses through singing, dancing, and theatrical performances. The day concludes at 3:20 PM, with the exception of Wednesdays, which conclude earlier to accommodate inter-school sports. Each day presents significant challenges, yet the rewards are immeasurable.

The academic environment at this institution demands considerable time and dedication, yet it offers an exceptional platform for individuals seeking academic success. The positive atmosphere fostered here has facilitated my adjustment to the learning environment, far surpassing my initial apprehension.
